About me

My name is Kim Ouweleen, I was born in 1988 and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I am an illustrator, author, proofreader and go teacher. My artist pseudonym is Murugandi.

From a young age I started drawing and discovered that I love to explore my creativity. During elementary school I was fascinated by animals, which filled the pages of my sketchbooks. During high school I became interested in surrealism, developed my own style and started writing. In 2006 I studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Rietveld School of Art & Design) and began my studies of art history at the University of Amsterdam. During my university studies I mostly focused on modern art, particularly surrealism, absurdism and humor in art. In 2012 I received my MA degree.

I am the author of three books:
  •  Weird and Wonderful - Volume 1: Extraordinary Moves by Professional Go Players.
Published in 2021 by the Kiseido Publishing Company.

Based on my book, an art exhibition with the same title was held in Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch from July 28th to October 28th 2018, which I co-curated.
'De pijn van het zijn: zwarte humor als troost', a chapter from the book, was published as an article in NRC Handelsblad on 26th of July 2018 (click here).
